National Theatre New Stage reconstruction paused due to asbestos

Construction workers at the National Theatre's New Stage (Nová scéna) in Prague have discovered a higher quantity of asbestos than previously anticipated. Jan Burian, director of the National Theatre, stated that external demolition work has been paused to allow for the careful removal of the material using methods that protect the surrounding environment and public health.

The general reconstruction project, valued at 1.8 billion CZK, is being managed by a consortium led by Metrostav DIZ and is expected to last approximately two years. While external work is currently limited, Burian noted that the project remains on schedule. The public will be able to move through the area normally until the end of November, though the closure of Václav Havel Square is expected around December.

In addition to the technical challenges, Burian called for a more robust debate regarding the theatre's long-term financing, noting that the institution received its budget later than usual this year. To manage the ongoing reconstruction, certain performances, such as Laterna magika, will be hosted at alternative venues like Palác Akropolis.
