National Theatre of Ghana to undergo renovation with Chinese support
The Government of Ghana has announced a major renovation and modernization project for the National Theatre, supported by the People’s Republic of China. Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie stated that the initiative aims to upgrade the facility’s infrastructure, technical systems, and operational capacity to meet international standards.
The project follows a high-level Chinese delegation's assessment of the facility in December 2025 to determine the necessary scope of work. The renovation is intended to reposition the theatre as a world-class venue for promoting Ghanaian arts and culture, enhancing its ability to host major theatrical productions, concerts, and exhibitions.
To preserve the facility during the preparation phase, management has implemented a rigorous maintenance regime and improved security measures. The Chinese government has also provided assurances of continued cooperation to ensure the theatre remains properly maintained after the renovation is complete.
