National Trust for Historic Preservation launches $10M legal defense fund

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has launched a $10 million legal defense fund to combat what it describes as “urgent and existential threats” to the nation’s civic and cultural heritage. The nonprofit organization, which is tasked by Congress with protecting historic sites, intends to use the funds to bolster its legal division and government relations staff.

The initiative follows several controversial renovation projects led by President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. These include a massive White House ballroom project involving the razing of the East Wing, the paving of the White House Rose Garden to create a patio, and the addition of a helipad to the South Lawn. Other contested projects include efforts to renovate the Kennedy Center, build a triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial, and refurbish the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

While the group previously sued in federal court to halt the White House ballroom project pending congressional approval, the Supreme Court recently ruled against the Trust, stating the group likely lacked the legal standing to challenge the project. This ruling allowed construction on the ballroom to proceed.
