National Unity Party defends electoral system reform

Ahmet Savaşan, General Secretary of the National Unity Party (UBP), stated that the removal of the mixed electoral system is not a last-minute change but a process that began three years ago. He emphasized that the objective is to more accurately reflect the will of the people in the ballot boxes.

Savaşan addressed the President's decision to return the Election and Referendum (Amendment) Law to the Assembly of the Republic, noting that this decision does not align with the ongoing legislative process. He recalled that the proposal was first submitted to the Assembly on May 9, 2023, by Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu with the approval of the UBP group.

Furthermore, Savaşan accused the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) of failing to honor its commitments. He claimed that during previous discussions, the CTP had indicated they would not oppose the removal of the mixed system and would vote in favor if the UBP met certain requirements. Savaşan characterized the CTP's current stance in favor of maintaining the mixed system as a significant inconsistency.
