National Unity Party faces deadlock over candidate selection
The National Unity Party (UBP) in Northern Cyprus is facing significant internal turmoil following its parliamentary candidate selection process. The convention has been marred by allegations of irregularities regarding the digital voting system and the discrepancy between reported vote counts and the physical ballot boxes used.
At least 17 formal objections have been filed, including a high-profile challenge from Speaker of the Assembly Ziya Öztürkler. Öztürkler stated that while he is exercising his right to object, he hopes the party can resolve the dispute quickly to focus on its political objectives.
Questions have also been raised regarding a last-minute change in the digital voting software provider to a Turkey-based firm. Amidst the uncertainty, UBP Chairman and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel reportedly traveled to Ankara, while Convention Council President Hüseyin Paşa was hospitalized. The deadline to submit candidate lists to the High Election Board is October 27.
