National Uranium Company bankruptcy threatens Romanian nuclear supply
The Bucharest Tribunal has ordered the bankruptcy and dissolution of the National Uranium Company (CNU), which has been in insolvency since December 2021. The company failed to recover after its reorganization plan was rejected in 2025, reporting negligible turnover and zero profit.
This dissolution raises concerns regarding the security of raw material supplies for Romania's nuclear sector, particularly as the country develops production capacities at Cernavodă and explores small modular reactor projects. Member of Parliament Cosmin Andrei has requested clarifications from the Ministry of Energy regarding government measures to ensure future supply and the management of environmental and nuclear security obligations associated with the company's assets.
Approximately 30 specialists are expected to be laid off, with the government allocating 3.23 million lei from the unemployment insurance budget to cover their monthly income supplements. While a judicial liquidator will manage the sealed assets, Nuclearelectrica has already taken over a portion of the company's patrimony, including the uranium concentrate processing line in Feldioara.
