National Water and Sewerage Corporation seeks UGX 650bn for water expansion
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is seeking UGX 650 billion (approximately USD 176 million) to expand water production and supply to 50 towns across Uganda. The proposed funding includes a UGX 500 billion concessionary loan from the government at a 2% annual interest rate, featuring a two-year grace period and a 20-year repayment term. Additionally, the plan calls for a UGX 150 billion revenue grant, consistent with previous government support levels.
The funds are intended to be released in five annual tranches of UGX 130 billion between the 2027/28 and 2031/32 financial years. During a visit to the corporation’s International Resource Centre, the Minister of Water and Environment, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, pledged government support for the initiative and encouraged long-term planning.
To increase self-reliance and mitigate the impact of global conflicts on imported materials, the Minister indicated that the government is prepared to support NWSC in establishing domestic assembly plants for essential components such as water meters and pipes.
