Native American Heritage Month recognition and celebrations
November marks Native American Heritage Month, a period dedicated to honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American communities. The observance was formally established in 1990 following a national proclamation by President George H. W. Bush.
This year, the theme is “Honoring Our Roots, Renewing Our Future,” which focuses on ancestral strength, community resilience, and supporting future generations. Organizations such as the San Diego State University Native Resource Center highlight the sovereignty of more than 575 federally recognized Tribal Nations.
In celebration of the month, curated literary lists include works such as the memoir “A Voice Like Mine” by Deb Haaland, which explores her experiences as the first Native American woman to serve in various high-level United States government roles, and “Horses: poems” by Jake Skeets, which examines the Navajo nation.
