Native American organizations launch voter education initiatives

The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has launched ‘Native Vote Week’ to promote voter education and highlight the importance of Native voting power. The initiative aims to address obstacles to voting and advocate for the protection of sovereignty.

A recent NARF report, ‘Obstacles Persist: According to the Data’, examines barriers faced by Native voters, including issues with registration, voter rolls, mail ballots, and provisional ballots. The report notes that new voter registrations in counties with large Native populations declined by 59% between 2020 and 2024, while the use of provisional ballots more than doubled.

In Washington state, the Suquamish Tribe is providing guidance for the upcoming general election on November 3, 2026. The tribe emphasizes that voting is a tool for exercising civic power to influence decisions regarding treaty rights, healthcare, and natural resources. Because Washington conducts elections by mail, the tribe recommends using official ballot drop boxes to avoid potential mail-in complications.

Advocacy efforts continue to push for the passage of the Native American Voting Rights Act in Congress to mitigate issues such as distant polling locations and unreliable broadband access.
