Natàlia Enguix to discuss democratic memory and exile in Mexico City

Natàlia Enguix, Vice President of the Diputación de València and official responsible for Democratic Memory, will participate in a series of conferences in Mexico City from September 1 to 3. The event, titled ‘When the world expels: the Republican exile, democratic memory and contemporary forced mobilities’, aims to explore the historical and modern implications of forced displacement.

Organized by the Ateneo Español de México, Universidad Iberoamericana, El Colegio de México, and the Universitat de València, the sessions will feature discussions with historians Eugenia Allier and Mónica Acosta, with Jorge de Hoyos serving as moderator. A central theme of the debate is how to prevent democratic memory from being reduced to mere institutional narratives or formal commemorations.

Enguix emphasized that public responsibility involves using memory as a tool to understand the present and strengthen democracy. She noted that while previous efforts in Valencia focused on locating and exhuming mass graves and identifying victims, recent policies have shifted toward increased educational outreach and public dissemination for younger generations.
