NATO allies discuss Strait of Hormuz navigation options

NATO's top commander held a videoconference with interested allies to discuss potential contributions toward supporting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. A spokesperson for the commander, U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, clarified that while NATO is facilitating these discussions due to its ability to coordinate allies, this is not an official NATO mission.

NATO members are seeking to avoid direct involvement in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Instead, efforts are being directed toward non-alliance initiatives to ensure the strait remains open. France and the United Kingdom are leading the development of a coalition involving approximately twelve countries to guarantee safe passage once regional tensions subside or the conflict is resolved.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime corridor, having accounted for roughly one-fifth of global oil trade prior to February. However, any long-term maritime security arrangement in the region would ultimately require the consent of Iran.
