NATO allies intercept Russian subsea cable sabotage plot near Svalbard

NATO allies, including the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States, intercepted Russian submarines near the Svalbard archipelago during a secretive exercise this spring. According to Western officials, the operation involved Russia’s Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) using deep-sea submersibles to simulate the deployment of technology designed to disable critical undersea cables.

The joint operation tracked and confronted the Russian vessels at sea, preventing them from completing the exercise. While the Russian vessels eventually left the area, no undersea cables were damaged during the incident. The discovery of this specific technology and the involvement of the United States had not been previously reported, though Britain and Norway had disclosed uncovering covert Russian activity in Arctic waters in April.

The incident occurs amid concerns among Western intelligence officials regarding increased Russian sabotage operations in Europe. While the Kremlin consistently denies conducting sabotage or plotting confrontations with NATO, officials suggest such exercises are intended to simulate potential conflict scenarios.
