NATO and French tanker aircraft conduct operations over the Black Sea
Two Airbus A330 MRTT tanker aircraft, one belonging to the French Air Force and the other to a NATO multinational fleet, conducted operations over the Black Sea toward Bulgaria. The French aircraft departed from Istres, Southern France, while the NATO tanker departed from Cologne. Flight trajectories suggest aerial refueling activities involving fighter jets that were not visible on public tracking platforms.
This activity follows the conclusion of the Steadfast Noon exercise. Additionally, recent military aviation movements in the region include a U.S. Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft landing in Varna on October 20, and a U.S. Boeing C-17 Globemaster III landing at Burgas airport on October 21. The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense stated that the C-17 landing was part of routine aviation traffic and not linked to heightened security measures in the Black Sea.
