NATO assesses Baltic military presence as sufficient

NATO Deputy Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, General John Mead, has stated that the current military presence in the Baltic states is sufficient and does not require the deployment of additional troops. While acknowledging that Estonia and Latvia face logistical challenges due to a lack of 'strategic geographic depth,' Mead noted that military security in the region has improved significantly following the adoption of the Euro-Atlantic deterrence and defense concept.

NATO maintains approximately 10,000 ground troops across the Baltic region, including the Multinational Brigade in Latvia, a German-led battle group in Lithuania, and British-led forces in Estonia. The region is also supported by the NATO Baltic Air Defence mission. Mead emphasized that regular military exercises are essential to ensure units can operate according to plan, noting that NATO's strategic planning accounts for potential shifts in the security landscape should hostilities in Ukraine cease.
