NATO Secretary General urges UK and Europe to increase defense spending
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called for increased defense investment from the United Kingdom and Europe, warning that the alliance faces its most dangerous and complex security environment in decades. During a visit to the UK, Rutte met with Prime Minister Andy Burnham to discuss defense commitments and the necessity of maintaining military strength amidst geopolitical uncertainty, including conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.
Rutte noted that many in Europe had previously assumed the United States would always provide the majority of military forces and funding. This perspective has shifted following the return of Donald Trump to the White House. At the 2025 Hague summit, NATO members agreed to a target of increasing defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, a move intended to ensure Europe takes a leading role in continental defense.
While Rutte praised the UK's commitment, the British government currently plans to increase defense spending to 2.7% of GDP by the end of the next decade. Meeting the 3.5% target would require an estimated additional £30 billion in funding.
