NATO Chief warns China could use Russia to distract West during Taiwan conflict

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned of the increasing interconnection between the Indo-Pacific and Europe. He suggested that if China were to move against Taiwan or the First Island Chain, President Xi Jinping might coordinate with his “junior partner,” Vladimir Putin, to prompt Russian aggression in Europe to keep Western forces occupied.

Rutte noted a growing recognition in both Europe and the United States that a conflict in the Indo-Pacific could have consequences far beyond that region. He emphasized that such a scenario would force the West to face serious problems in two theaters simultaneously.

Additionally, Rutte highlighted the heavy toll of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, estimating that Russia suffers losses of over 40,000 killed or seriously wounded personnel every month. He observed that despite these significant losses, Putin shows no signs of seeking an end to the war.
