NATO Commander emphasizes Western Balkans' role in European security

Brigadier General James C. Fowler, commander of the NATO headquarters in Sarajevo, has emphasized the critical importance of NATO's presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Western Balkans. In an interview, Fowler stated that the stability of this region is directly linked to the security of the European continent.

He described the Western Balkans as a transitional zone where Eastern and Western values meet, noting that the area is currently a site of competition between these two spheres. Fowler warned that given the ongoing war in Europe and Russian aggression in Ukraine, the West cannot afford an unstable or insecure Western Balkans.

Fowler highlighted that closer ties to Western institutions, including NATO, the European Union, and EUFOR, provide the stability necessary for prosperity and foreign investment. He specifically cited the South Interconnection project, supported by the United States, as an example of how energy security and Western gas supplies could bolster the region.
