NATO conducts DiBaX 2026 military technology exercises in Latvia

NATO completed the Digital Backbone eXperimentation (DiBaX 2026) program at the Ādaži military base in Latvia, running from October 19 to 30, 2026. The exercise aimed to create a unified digital infrastructure for NATO member states to facilitate joint operations and data exchange.

The program involved more than 60 technology companies and tested several advanced capabilities, including the use of commercial 5G networks to provide secure communication slices for military traffic. Other tests included using 5G towers as passive sensors to detect drones and evaluating resilient communications through automatic switching between radio, satellite, and tropospheric links.

Admiral Pierre Vandier, NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation, noted that agentic AI was used to synchronize diverse equipment in minutes. He emphasized that while the technology exists, the primary challenge remains the rapid adoption of these innovations into large-scale military capabilities to keep pace with evolving modern warfare.
