NATO defense chiefs vote for new Military Committee president

NATO defense chiefs are meeting in Copenhagen to elect a new president for the Military Committee through a secret ballot. The candidates include German General Carsten Breuer and Canadian General Jennie Carignan. The Military Committee serves as the alliance's highest military authority, providing independent recommendations to the Secretary General on operations, capabilities, and readiness.

This leadership transition occurs amid heightened security concerns in Europe. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that European nations must prepare for a dangerous security environment, noting Russia's increasing recalcitrance due to the war in Ukraine. Polish leadership has further cautioned that Russia may test NATO defenses through drone or missile incursions into Alliance airspace.

In response to these threats, NATO is prioritizing defense investments, including a commitment to invest over $40 billion over the next five years into anti-drone capabilities. The alliance is also focusing on member state resilience, specifically regarding the protection of essential services such as energy, water, communications, and healthcare.
