NATO discusses KFOR security mandate and troop optimization in Kosovo

The North Atlantic Council met in the KFOR format to discuss the security situation in Kosovo with KFOR Commander Major General Ozkan Ulutas. Ulutas provided an update on the mission’s ongoing efforts to maintain a secure environment for all citizens and ensure freedom of movement in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

Discussions also focused on the gradual optimization of KFOR’s presence and structure. This process is based on evolving security conditions on the ground and remains reversible should the security situation deteriorate. NATO emphasized that KFOR will remain equipped, trained, and organized to fulfill its long-term mandate and respond to various security scenarios.

NATO reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Western Balkans and its commitment to regional stability. The Alliance expressed support for the EU-facilitated dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia as the framework for resolving outstanding issues and respecting the rights of all communities. Major General Ulutas is expected to complete his second term in mid-October, to be succeeded by Italian Major General Roberto Vergori.
