NATO expert: Russia lacks capacity to open new front against NATO

Jānis Sārts, director of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, stated that Russia currently lacks the military capacity to open a second front against NATO member states. He noted that Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine limits its military capabilities and that there are currently no signs of preparations for such an attack.

Sārts emphasized that while Russia remains a threat, it does not imply an immediate invasion. He distinguished between immediate military threats and long-term risks that could increase if the war in Ukraine ends, allowing Russia time to replenish its military strength.

While direct military aggression is not an immediate certainty, Sārts warned that hybrid warfare threats persist and are not unique to the Baltic states, affecting countries like Germany and France as well. He criticized emotional warnings of imminent attacks, suggesting that such alarmism is counterproductive to serious, data-driven defense planning.
