NATO faces security challenges from rising drone threats

The increasing prevalence of drone technology is creating significant security challenges for NATO and commercial aviation. Former Romanian Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birkal has highlighted a critical vulnerability in NATO's response capabilities: the narrow window of time available for military decision-making versus the lengthy process required for intelligence verification.

Birkal cited recent incidents in August, including a Spanish F-18 intercepting a drone in Romanian airspace and Romanian F-16s responding to a maritime drone near the Neptun Alfa energy platform. She warned that commanders must be empowered to act quickly to protect populations without waiting for definitive intelligence on the source of the threat, as hesitation can be exploited in 'grey zone' operations.

In a separate maritime incident in the Danube Delta near the Romanian border, a Russian drone reportedly struck the Turkish-owned cargo ship M/V Mariam M. Reports indicate the strike resulted in fatalities among the captain and pilot, along with injuries to crew members and significant damage to the vessel's bridge and accommodation block.
