NATO intern remains in Belgian custody on espionage charges

A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin, suspected of espionage at NATO headquarters in Belgium, will remain in pretrial detention. The Belgian Chamber of Indictments rejected the suspect's appeal and extended her custody for an additional month.

The suspect was an intern at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Mons, Belgium. Security services reportedly flagged her for suspicious behavior and the unauthorized collection of sensitive information. She was arrested in late July following searches of her home and workplace.

She faces charges of espionage for the benefit of a third country and participation in a criminal organization. While the Belgian prosecutor's office has not officially named her, a federal source indicated that Canadian officials identify the suspect as Biwei Zhang, also known as Claire Zhang, a former employee of Canadian government agencies.
