NATO jets intercept drone in Latvian airspace

Turkish F-16 fighter jets participated in a real-world interception mission in the Baltic region on August 14. Following the entry of an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) into Latvian airspace, NATO Allied Air Command activated its air defense mechanisms.

Two Italian Eurofighter jets launched from the Šiauliai base in Lithuania, while two Turkish F-16s deployed from the Ämari air base in Estonia. After identifying the target, an Italian Eurofighter successfully shot down the drone over an uninhabited area. The operation was conducted under the operational control of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre.

The deployment marks a shift for the Turkish Air Force, as these aircraft are now performing active air defense duties on NATO’s northeastern front rather than solely participating in training or symbolic presence.
