NATO General Grynkewich: Alliance military power far exceeds Russia

NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US General Alexus G. Grynkewich, stated in an interview with Der Spiegel that NATO's military capabilities significantly exceed those of Russia. He noted that in a major conflict, the alliance would possess a decisive advantage, specifically citing Russia's lack of modern F-35 fighter jets and its inferior numbers of modern destroyers and submarines compared to NATO.

Grynkewich expressed confidence that Russia would not launch a large-scale conventional attack on Europe due to NATO's conventional deterrence. Instead, he argued that President Vladimir Putin is resorting to subversive methods such as sabotage, arson, and terrorist attacks because he lacks other options and seeks to avoid direct conflict. The general characterized these actions as a 'dangerous game' intended to convince Western populations that supporting Ukraine is too risky.

Addressing recent Russian threats regarding the Kaliningrad exclave, Grynkewich emphasized that NATO is a defensive alliance that only acts if attacked, suggesting Russia has no reason to fear for the territory. He further noted that the war in Ukraine has weakened Russia's position in Kaliningrad while NATO has strengthened its presence in the Baltic region. To maintain deterrence, he stressed the need for continuous modernization, extensive military training, and the demonstration of capabilities.
