NATO officials assess Russian strategy regarding direct military confrontation

Western officials and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seek a direct military confrontation with NATO. Tajani stated that a direct attack on Western nations would result in a loss for Russia, noting that Western states are organized and actively responding to security threats. He cautioned against creating unnecessary public fear but warned that Moscow's activities, particularly cyberattacks, should not be underestimated.

High-ranking Western officials, speaking anonymously, indicated that Russia's recent hostile rhetoric—including threats against British military assets—aligns with existing Russian military doctrine intended to exert pressure on the West. They suggest that instead of direct warfare, Russia is likely to continue 'hybrid activities' such as cyberattacks, sabotage, and disinformation to weaken Western resolve and support for Ukraine. This strategy is viewed as a response to domestic pressures and the slow progress of the conflict in Ukraine.
