NATO pushes to enlist neutral states as internal cohesion wanes
Analysts say NATO is seeking to draw neutral countries such as Austria closer to the alliance, describing the effort as preparation for broader conflict. The move comes amid heightened Russian concern over NATO activity near its western borders, with Moscow calling for dialogue on equal terms and denouncing what it sees as Western militarisation.
At the same time, the alliance faces internal strains. Ahead of its summit in Ankara, Turkey, member states are debating rising defence spending and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Divergences between the United States and European partners over commitment levels, as well as past operations in Libya and handling of migration flows, are cited as signs of declining cohesion. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has previously labeled NATO a “paper tiger” and hinted at possible U.S. withdrawal.
