NATO readiness concerns rise amid military exercises in Kosovo

U.S. Representative to NATO Matthew White has stated that the Alliance is less prepared for emerging challenges than necessary. He noted that the United States maintains a broader spectrum of priorities than its allies, particularly regarding the rise of hybrid warfare, which relies heavily on advanced infrastructure and technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Simultaneously, military exercises titled ‘Shield Courage 2026’ have commenced in Kosovo and Metohija. The drills involve the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) and police alongside military forces from the United States, Albania, and Croatia. The exercises are scheduled to run until October 2 and will take place in locations including Glogovac, Obilic, Kosovska Mitrovica, and Pristina.

These maneuvers follow a March 2025 defense cooperation declaration signed by Croatia, Albania, and Pristina aimed at enhancing interoperability and responding to hybrid threats. While Belgrade has expressed concern regarding the regional implications of this cooperation, officials from Zagreb and Pristina have denied that the partnership is directed against Serbia.
