NATO receives Westphalian Peace Prize as Merz warns of Russian threats FAST-MOVING

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a keynote speech in Münster during the presentation of the Westphalian Peace Prize to NATO. Merz emphasized that NATO has served as the pillar of Euro-Atlantic peace for three generations, protecting freedom, security, and prosperity.

Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Merz warned that a decline in German support could lead to a 'dictated peace' and the destabilization of the Ukrainian state, potentially resulting in mass migration toward the West. He cautioned that if Russia is not contained, its military machinery could eventually target Germany and NATO itself. Merz also addressed domestic political challenges, specifically criticizing the AfD and its supporters for their stance on Ukraine aid, describing them as having 'Russian backers.'

The event, attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, also honored the international initiative socioMovens with a youth prize. While the award celebrates NATO's contribution to European peace, the ceremony also drew protests from the 'Peace instead of NATO' alliance, which criticized the military organization's historical interventions.
