NATO Secretary General and Lithuanian PM discuss defense and Ukraine support
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius at NATO headquarters to discuss eastern flank defense, drone threats, and continued support for Ukraine.
During the meeting, Rutte highlighted the importance of collective defense, citing a recent incident where NATO-deployed Italian jets downed a drone that violated Lithuanian airspace. To counter evolving aerial threats, NATO is strengthening its integrated air and missile defense systems through initiatives such as ‘Drone Edge.’
Lithuania was recognized for its high level of defense investment, with expected spending reaching 5.38% of its GDP this year. The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Lithuania’s commitment to Ukraine, including annual military assistance of at least 0.25% of its GDP and a $38 million contribution to Ukraine’s defense industry, alongside support for energy and railway infrastructure.
