NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addresses US public in Iowa

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte spoke at a forum hosted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs in Des Moines, Iowa. The appearance serves as a strategic effort to engage the American public regarding the future of the transatlantic partnership and European security.

As European leaders navigate uncertainty regarding United States commitment to the alliance, there is an increasing focus on whether to build independent European defense capabilities or increase spending to ensure continued American engagement. The visit to a Midwestern audience highlights the necessity for European leaders to build broad public support within the United States to sustain the alliance, rather than relying solely on high-level diplomatic negotiations.
