Spanish Navy officer removed from NATO base following security probe

A high-ranking Spanish Navy officer has been removed from his post at the NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood, UK, following a security investigation. The incident stems from the officer's relationship with Janina White, a woman with British and Polish nationality who was born in the Soviet Union. The couple reportedly met via the dating app Tinder in late 2024.

Security concerns were raised after White attended a Christmas party at the Northwood base as the officer's guest in December 2024. NATO and Spanish authorities launched a joint investigation into whether White had links to Russian intelligence. While no evidence of espionage was found, the officer's security clearance was revoked, his base access was suspended, and he was eventually returned to Spain in the summer of 2025.

Janina White has denied all allegations of espionage, asserting she is a victim of discrimination due to her Russian origins. She has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the UK Ministry of Defence. White also reported being approached and questioned by an individual she identified as an FSB agent while visiting her father in St. Petersburg.
