NATO shifts Iceland air defence to integrated posture with Belgian F-16s
Belgian F-16 Fighting Falcons have officially assumed NATO air defence duties in Iceland at Keflavik Air Base. The month-long deployment, which began formally on 17 August, supports the Alliance’s enhanced Vigilance Activity Arctic Sentry and strengthens air defence presence in the Arctic region.
This mission is part of a broader strategic shift by NATO’s Allied Air Command toward a unified Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) posture. This framework moves away from separate air-policing missions to a multi-layered, 360-degree response system designed to counter threats including crewed aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. This transition follows recent deployments in Lithuania, Estonia, and Romania.
