Russia and North Korea open first road bridge over Tumen River
Russia and North Korea have officially inaugurated the first road bridge connecting the two nations, spanning the Tumen River. The structure, named the Yakov Novichenko Bridge, connects the Rason region of North Korea with the Khasan region of Russia.
The one-kilometer-long, two-lane bridge was completed after 495 days of construction. The opening ceremony was conducted via video link, attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Cabinet Chairman Pak Thae Song. The bridge is designed to handle up to 300 vehicles per day, with cargo transport beginning immediately and passenger transit expected to be permitted by the end of the year.
This infrastructure project marks a significant shift from previous transit methods, which relied on temporary boards placed over an existing railway bridge. The new connection will integrate with Russia's federal road network, facilitating increased economic, scientific, and technological cooperation between the two countries.
