Ankara NATO summit secures €70 bn Ukraine aid and €50 bn defense procurement boost

The NATO summit held in Ankara on 7‑8 July 2026 produced a series of large‑scale commitments. European leaders used the summit to push a more European‑focused NATO 3.0, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz calling for a “European‑stronger” alliance and several countries, including Canada, pledging at least €70 billion annually for Ukraine. President Donald Trump reiterated pressure on allies to increase defence spending while the United States signaled a gradual drawdown of forces in Europe. The summit reaffirmed Article 5 commitments and highlighted the alliance’s strategic focus on counter‑Iran actions in the Strait of Hormuz and continued deterrence against Russia.
