NATO summit in Ankara pledges billions in defence contracts and €70 bn aid for Ukraine
Allied NATO leaders are set to allocate billions of dollars for new weapons contracts and to boost defence production at the July 7‑8 summit in Ankara. A draft declaration will reaffirm commitment to Article 5 and keep Russia listed as a long‑term security threat. The summit will also include a pledge of roughly €70 billion in military assistance for Ukraine, with a promise of an equivalent sum for the following year. President Donald Trump of the United States is expected to attend, amid tensions over defence‑spending burden sharing and the U.S. role in the alliance. NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte is pushing an agenda focused on expanding industrial defence capacity, accelerating delivery, reducing costs and developing long‑range strike capabilities, while U.S. participation in the funding mechanism remains uncertain.
