NATO to deploy surveillance resources to Black Sea following drone attacks
NATO is mobilizing additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, drones, and intelligence personnel to the Black Sea region. This decision follows a series of drone attacks targeting commercial vessels near the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania.
Since early October, multiple merchant ships have been struck, with reports indicating at least 23 sailors are missing or dead. In one incident, the ship Chelsea 3 sustained three hull breaches, likely caused by an explosive or drone, and was subsequently towed to the West Burgas port in Bulgaria.
In response to the escalating security situation, a US P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft has begun operating over the Black Sea at Bulgaria's request. Additionally, Romania is working with US experts to develop a National Action Plan to defend against drone threats and protect critical infrastructure.
While NATO has not officially attributed the attacks to a specific country, military analysts suggest Russian involvement. The alliance is also deploying specialized teams to conduct forensic analysis of the explosives used in the maritime strikes.
