NATO Secretary General calls for increased air defense for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during a visit to Tallinn, Estonia, has called for urgent increases in air defense support for Ukraine as winter approaches. Rutte warned that Russia is intensifying its attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure, leaving approximately 600,000 people without electricity and causing at least seven deaths in recent strikes. He characterized Russia's ongoing hybrid warfare against NATO allies as a sign of weakness intended to provoke panic.

In Estonia, President Ülle Madise reaffirmed the nation's commitment to defense, stating that Estonia will maintain spending at a minimum of 5% of its GDP. Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas argued that international pressure should be directed at Russia rather than forcing Ukraine into concessions. Kallas defended Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries as a legitimate form of self-defense, noting that oil revenue is a primary source of funding for the Russian war effort.

Security concerns have also extended to the Black Sea, where NATO is working with Bulgaria and Romania to address drone attacks on commercial vessels. Rutte pledged to reinforce the alliance's eastern flank and increase counter-drone capabilities to ensure maritime security.
