NATO Secretary General Rutte urges increased military aid for Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called for increased military support for Ukraine, warning that delays in aid are costing human lives. Rutte emphasized that allies must 'dig deeper' to help Ukraine defend against intensifying Russian aerial attacks and to capitalize on opportunities across various fronts.
Several European nations are reportedly in the final stages of plans to purchase American Patriot air defense missiles to bolster Ukraine's defenses before the winter season. This procurement is expected to be financed through NATO's Priority Requirements List (PURL) mechanism. Germany has already announced it will supply Patriot missiles from its own state reserves.
In addition to military aid, Rutte addressed Russian hybrid threats in Europe, specifically noting a recent incident in Leipzig, Germany. He reaffirmed NATO's unity and support for Germany in the face of such activities. Rutte also highlighted Germany's commitment to increasing its defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2029.
