Natural biocoagulants tested for Krueng Daroy River water purification
Research conducted at Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry in Banda Aceh has evaluated the effectiveness of natural biocoagulants to reduce pollution in the Krueng Daroy River. The studies focused on using avocado seed powder (Persea americana Mill.) and tamarind seed powder (Tamarindus indica L.) as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic chemical coagulants.
Regarding avocado seed powder, the optimal conditions were found at a dose of 0.2 g/L with a rapid stirring speed of 120 rpm. This treatment reduced Total Suspended Solids (TSS) by 55% and turbidity by 46%, while maintaining a neutral pH between 7.1 and 7.7.
In the study of tamarind seed powder, the optimal dose was identified as 0.1 g/L. This application reduced turbidity by 63.93% and TSS by 70.97%, with post-treatment pH levels ranging from 6.8 to 7.4. Both natural materials show potential as effective biocoagulants for river water pre-treatment.
