Natural compound D-chiro-inositol shows potential to improve memory in Alzheimer's models

An international research team, including experts from the University of Málaga and IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND, has identified the potential of D-chiro-inositol to address multiple mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. The study, published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, utilized cellular and animal models to demonstrate that oral administration of this natural compound can reduce beta-amyloid accumulation in the hippocampus and decrease neuroinflammatory responses.

In addition to reducing inflammation and protein buildup, the research showed improvements in cognitive abilities such as recognition memory. The study involved collaborators from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and the Andalusian Clinical and Translational Research Network in Neurology (NEURO-RECA).

Technological development of D-chiro-inositol as a therapeutic candidate is being led by Advenion, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of the Málaga-based company Euronutra S. L. The compound used in the study is a standardized, plant-derived version sourced from carob.
