Natural disasters and the importance of seismic preparedness

Natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis continue to pose significant risks to human life and infrastructure. Historical data highlights the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile, a 9.5 Mw event that remains one of the most powerful recorded in human history. This seismic event caused widespread destruction and triggered tsunamis that reached as far as Japan, resulting in 139 deaths there.

In Colombia, a recent earthquake on August 10 has created a complex humanitarian emergency, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon and existing internal conflicts. While the event exposed vulnerabilities in physical infrastructure, it also prompted significant civic solidarity. The current administration is working to address the crisis through the state apparatus, aiming to improve upon previous management experiences within the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
