Natural gardening methods for soil health and pest control

Natural methods for garden maintenance and pest management offer sustainable alternatives to chemical treatments. Using pine cones as mulch can help regulate soil temperature, suppress weed growth, and reduce water evaporation. Their hard scales also act as a physical barrier against slugs and rodents. Additionally, pine cones can be used in compost to improve aeration due to their porous structure.

Regarding pest control, relying on chemical slug pellets can damage soil health by harming microorganisms responsible for organic matter decomposition and nutrient availability. Such chemicals may also lead to secondary poisoning in birds, hedgehogs, and amphibians. Instead, managing the garden ecosystem to be less attractive to slugs while supporting their natural predators is recommended for long-term stability.
