Natural gas heating cost forecasts diverge for upcoming winter
Conflicting forecasts have emerged regarding natural gas heating costs for the upcoming winter. The American Gas Association (AGA) projects that households using natural gas for space heating will see costs decrease by approximately 14%. This decline is attributed to lower gas prices and milder weather conditions.
In contrast, the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA) predicts a 5.8% increase in natural gas heating costs. NEADA reports that an 8.7% rise across all heating fuels could bring the average winter heating bill to $1,030.
Analysts note that increasing demand from electrification, electric vehicles, and data centers, alongside a shift away from coal-fired electricity, may place additional pressure on natural gas supplies. Experts suggest that relying heavily on a single energy source could lead to volatility if demand spikes during a cold winter.
