European natural gas prices surge amid Iran conflict and LNG shortages

European natural gas prices are surging due to the ongoing conflict in Iran and limited liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. The TTF benchmark price has increased by 14% over the last five trading days and 83% since the beginning of the year.

Key drivers of the price spike include the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about one-fifth of global LNG trade, and constraints on Qatar's export capacity. Additionally, European Union gas storage levels are currently at approximately 60%, significantly below the seasonal norm of 80% and the European Commission's 90% target.

The economic impact varies by region. In Estonia, rising gas prices are expected to affect consumer prices across nearly all sectors immediately. In contrast, experts from Citadele Bank suggest that in Latvia, the impact on household and communal utility costs will be felt with a delay of several months, though it will eventually influence the prices of food, goods, and services.
