Federico Veronesi wins Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026
Italian photographer Federico Veronesi has won the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year grand prize for his black-and-white photograph, ‘The Aftermath’. The image depicts a female elephant in Namibia’s Huab River Valley carrying a deceased calf. While initially appearing to show maternal grief, researchers noted the 14-year-old elephant had previously been observed carrying the bodies of calves belonging to other females, suggesting complex cognitive and social behaviors.
Oscar Whitfield, a 14-year-old photographer based in Zimbabwe, won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for his photograph, ‘Labour of Love’, which captures a dung beetle in the Zambezi National Park.
The competition, organized by the Natural History Museum in London, received a record 65,403 entries from 121 countries. An exhibition featuring 100 award-winning images is scheduled to open at the museum on October 16, 2026.
