Natural History Museum Mainz preserves Ice Age fossils
The Natural History Museum Mainz preserves the geological and paleontological heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate. Curator Manuel Stenger manages an Ice Age collection containing specimens aged between 20,000 and 400,000 years.
Many of these fossils, including remains of mammoths, reindeer, and hippopotamuses, were discovered in gravel pits within the Rhine-Main region during post-war reconstruction efforts. The collection is maintained in close cooperation with the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE).
