Natural History Museum of Crete reopens renovated exhibition spaces

The Natural History Museum of Crete has officially reopened its renovated exhibition spaces in Heraklion. The inauguration ceremony, held on Friday, October 16, 2026, was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnautakis, and Archbishop Eugenios of Crete.

Minister Papastavrou emphasized that the museum aims to bring science closer to society and highlight the region's unique natural wealth. He noted that protecting natural heritage is a priority and stressed the importance of balancing development with environmental preservation. Additionally, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the new Heraklion International Airport and the museum to promote the island's biodiversity.

Regional Governor Arnautakis described the museum, which is housed in the historic Old Power Station, as a destination for knowledge and inspiration for future generations. He highlighted the importance of supporting natural history institutions to address challenges such as the climate crisis, rising Mediterranean sea levels, and biodiversity loss. He further noted that Crete is actively responding to these issues through long-term environmental projects and the management of UNESCO-recognized sites.
