Natural household cleaning methods using common kitchen ingredients
Common household ingredients such as lemon, salt, baking soda, vinegar, and sugar are frequently used as natural alternatives to chemical cleaning products. These methods aim to reduce exposure to potentially harmful substances like bleach or ammonia, which have been linked to respiratory issues.
Different combinations offer varying mechanical and chemical actions. A mixture of lemon and coarse salt uses citric acid and abrasion to clean cutting boards and tile grout. Combining baking soda with dish soap and sugar creates a paste effective for degreasing kitchen surfaces like countertops and pans. In this mixture, the soap acts as a surfactant, the baking soda neutralizes odors, and the sugar provides gentle abrasion.
However, experts and organizations like ADEME note that mixing certain ingredients can be counterproductive. For instance, combining the acidic properties of vinegar or lemon with the basic properties of baking soda triggers an acid-base reaction. This effervescence creates a visual illusion of power, but the resulting mixture becomes nearly neutral in pH, significantly reducing its cleaning effectiveness.
