Natural household remedies for insect prevention

Natural methods can be used to deter common household insects such as ants and flies without the use of synthetic chemical sprays.

One method involves applying a mixture of white vinegar and water to door frames, window frames, and cracks. The acetic acid in vinegar can disorient insects like ants, which rely on scent trails to navigate. It is recommended to test the mixture on a small, inconspicuous area first, as vinegar may affect the texture or color of certain materials like waxed wood or natural stone.

Additionally, planting basil (Ocimum basilicum) near windows can act as a biological shield against flies. The plant releases volatile substances, including linalool and eugenol, which mask food odors and disorient flying insects. Placing the plant near ventilation points allows airflow to spread the scent, creating a natural repellent barrier.
